The company was founded in 1944 as Empresa Nacional de Electricidad, S.A. and changed its name to Endesa, S.A. in 1997.

Endesa is headquartered in Madrid, Spain.

As of October 05, 2007, Endesa SA is a subsidiary of Enel SpA (CM: ENEL).
